Cilgerran Castle stands above a steep gorge of the River Teifi in west Wales. Built in the early 13th century, it played a key role in defending the contested borderlands between Norman lords and native Welsh rulers.

Abergavenny Castle is a ruined Norman fortress in Monmouthshire, South Wales. It was first built in 1087 by the Norman lord Hamelin de Balun to secure the borderlands after the Norman conquest of England.
